When I was young I was never passionate about sport, and would go as far to say I hated it. I preferred to eat, watch tv and play video games, that’s what I loved to do. Needless to say I gained a lot of weight resulting in health issues including breathing problems. I was bullied in school and got into fights constantly. Upon medical advice, my mother pushed me into sports in an effort to have me spending less time in the house eating and watching TV, two things I really took pleasure in. Man, I developed a real grudge for that doctor.
As I got into sport, I began to lose weight, build confidence and love the changes it made to my body. I started making friends through sports and generally felt really good about myself. I was no longer in the house all day, my mum then had to limit how long I could be out for as given the opportunity I would be out all day playing football. It was my new love.
I became pretty good at it and was picked up by West Ham United FC where I played for 6 years, then I joined Tottenham Hotspur FC for 2 years before moving around other clubs. A combination of injuries ultimately stopped my playing career and so I decided not to give up and keep up my training in the gym.
I spent a lot of hours in the gym maintaining my own fitness and was always asked for advice on technique, methods and diet. I was passionate about helping people through fitness after harnessing it's power as I overcame illness, laziness and built a healthy strong body. This is where I began my journey as a personal trainer.
This journey has not always been smooth. I suffered a motorbike accident where I was hit from behind and suffered a major back injury, leaving me unable to train in the same capacity as before. As a result I developed an anxiety disorder that came with severe panic attacks, hospitalising me several times. It was here at my lowest point that I truly understood the perfect synergy between my mental, emotional and physical states that training had provided for me. Having clarity on this delicate equilibrium and the danger of creating an imbalance between our physical and mental spheres is what inspires me most as a trainer.
For me, fitness is not just simply looking good. It is being able to challenge adversity, build confidence and mental stability. It is so much more than social media likes. It’s a way of life that can ultimately make you happy about who you are and that’s what I aim for all my clients to achieve. It is total and complete self belief and confidence, being truly happy; the physical state will always come secondary. All the good habits developed in our sessions will not only help your present body but see you maintaining it long after our sessions are complete.
Taking the leap and committing to my first programme of sessions was one of the best things I have ever done for myself.
JJ has a very calm approach to training which has been so helpful in creating an atmosphere where I can confidently achieve my goals.
JJ told me he would make me love working out...he is true to his word!
